BIOGRAPHY

KAREN SPROUL

Karen Sproul is one of Australia’s most awarded and experienced producers. She began as a producer in advertising in a small, creative agency in Melbourne and her advertising agency experience subsequently spanned over 10 years, working for high profile creative agencies that included Publicis Mojo and Clemenger BBDO.

Eventually it seemed a natural move into the film production industry, and she joined a young Melbourne production company, Exit Films, in it’s infancy.  Exit Films has now grown to be one of Australia’s strongest, and most awarded, production companies.

For the last 17 years she has teamed with director Garth Davis, and together they have produced ground-breaking and internationally awarded work, such as Schweppes ‘Burst’, which won a Gold Lion at Cannes 2009; Herringbone ‘Henri’;  Tooheys 'Nocturnal Migration', US Cellular ‘Shadow Puppets’, Smirnoff ‘Comets’ and webfilm Coke Burn ‘Ride’, among many others.

Her work has been recognised at every major award show, including Cannes, New York Festival, Clio, D&AD, AICP, The British TV Awards, the London International Awards, and The One Show.

Her short film ‘Alice’ won a Dendy Award at the Sydney Film Festival in 2004.

Karen has spent much time living and working in Los Angeles with companies including Reset, Anonymous Content, Serial Pictures, Stink and MJZ. She has produced numerous commercials, for clients Budweiser, AT&T, Adidas, Nike, Cadillac and Elizabeth Arden, often featuring music and sporting celebrities.

In 2014/15 she was associate producer on the feature film ‘LION’, produced by Academy Award winning producers Emile Sherman and Iain Canning (The King’s Speech) and Angie Fielder (Aquarius Films), and directed by Emmy nominated Garth Davis (Top of the Lake), starring Academy Award winning actress Nicole Kidman, and Dev Patel.  LION was released in 2017, and went on to receive 6 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.  It won 2 BAFTA Awards for Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay.

She had the honour of being invited to be a member of the Film Craft jury at the Cannes Advertising Festival in June 2016.

Karen’s vast experience and unique skills have covered large-scale productions of the highest calibre and complexity, shooting in many different countries around the world.  She plays a key role in creating outstanding creative work, of the highest standard.
